What our ALUMNI are Saying about their Elementary School experiences at St. Margaret of Cortona
|
St. Margaret of Cortona was a "GREAT LEARNING EXPERIENCE."
"I love St. Margaret of Cortona School: I really do! I remember all my nunn antheir names with great affection. In the first grade I was given the lead in the play, which I continued to have through the eighth grade. So, of course, I became an actress!!! I loved Monsignor Doyle. He was in the seminary with my mother's uncle. I loved Father Dale. He was a seminarian with my mother's cousin, who became a Bishop."
I was married at St. Margaret on October 17, 1987 by Father Murphy. My family of TEN all went to school here, including my mother. I was the narrator in the seventh grade Christmas pagaent. My favorite teacher in seventh grade was Sr. Dominic. Sr. Richard was the principal at that time. It was a good school, and I credit it to where I am today! I am also a graduate of Fordham Prep 1983!
"I met my wife in St. Margaret's. We were confirmed the same day."
"I remember so many good times at St. Margaret of Cortona."
"My favorite teacher was Ms. Gomez (subsequently Mrs. Miller) for spending countless hours with me after school throughout the years for extra help. Also, noteworthy - Mrs. McDonald, Mrs. Bellizi, Sr. Dominic, Sr. O'Brien."
"My class held a 20-year reunion in 2000, and a few of us met over Thanksgiving weekend to begin planning a 30th for Spring 2010. If you send out future mailings, we would be grateful if you could mention our plans and ask alumni to contact me via email or phone, or to look for our page on facebook...St. Margaret of Cortona, Riverdale, Class of 1980 Reunion."
"I graduated St. Margaret School in 1954 and Cardinal Hayes High School in 1958. I attended Georgetown University Foreign Service 1958-1961; Fairfield University Pre-Med 1961-1963; Fordham University M.S. in 1964; SUNY Downstate Medical School MD 1968; Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center General Surgery 1975; Cornell-New York Hospital Surgeon 1977; Teaching Staff and Admitting Cornell and Columbia Presbyterian; St. Vincent's Hospital NYC"
"My two best friends are my friends from St. Margaret's - we've remained very close throughout the years."
"I was not very popular and was kind of quiet, but St. Margaret's was fun. I remember learning the Irish Jig and PE classes with those funny green gym suits with balloon legs. The nuns and priests were nice to me, and I still have great faith in Jesus and attend Church regularly in S.C. Sr. Margueritte was a "hoot."
"I attended St. Margaret's from third to eighth grade. We had 48 students in the class. Many of my classmates are close personal friends to this day. I had great experiences."
"At St. Margaret's from fourth or fifth grade on, there was ample opportunity to write essays in class and at home. It must have been a burden on our teachers to correct all those "compositions", but we learned to write. Later, when I taught at a college level, I was shocked to encounter students who claimed they had rarely taken an essay test and who had difficulty developing a thought on paper. I hope that in the current electronic environment - we will not forget the value of literacy."
