IMPORTANT Information Update: Last month Governor David Paterson proposed a number of mid-year cuts in his Deficit Reduction Plan (DRP), including a 10% cut in Mandated Services and the Comprehensive Attendance Program (CAP) funding. These cuts would have been added to the cuts in mandated services and the CAP he already made last spring. In addition to these cuts, the Governor also proposed to eliminate the state's liability to later reimburse nonpublic schools for the amounts he cut.
Despite the Governor's proposals, under increasing pressure from our advocacy efforts and other nonpublic school groups and their constituencies, the New York State legislature voted to reject the cuts and also agreed to maintain the state's liability for full reimbursement at a future time. Notwithstanding the fact that we dodged the bullet during mid-year cuts, we anticipate that the Governor's 2010-2011 fiscal year budget proposal, scheduled to be released in the third week of January will once again include proposed cuts to Mandated Services and CAP. We continue to be vigilant and to work to reject any additional cuts. In the meantime, it would be appropriate if schools call, write or email their state legislators to thank them for eliminating the Governor's proposed cuts to Mandated Services and CAP.
